Poverty in Africa

EACH DAY...

30,000 children die of hunger and preventable diseases

6,000 people die of AIDS

17 million have already died

12 million African children have lost one or both parents

About one half of all people in the world infected with HIV or AIDS are in Africa

41% of the world's children cannot attend school

6000 children in developing countries die because of lack of clean water and sanitation.

In homes with [these services] children are 60% less likely to die

2% of the world's grain harvest would be enough, if shared, to erase the problem of hunger and malnutrition around the world!

Poverty means illiteracy, inadequate medical care, disease, and brain damage

Bob and LuAnn Herring
Co-founders and Directors of Africa Connect

Bob and LuAnn are long-term residents of the Berkshires of Western Mass, where Bob has maintained a retail business for 30 years. They have four grown daughters and eight wonderful grandchildren. When a mutual friendWhen a mutual friend introduced Bob and LuAnn to Pastor Peter Siakama back in the summer of 2004, they had no idea where this relationship would bring them. But within 2 1/2 months, they found themselves in Kitale, Kenya, with their youngest daughter Jenelle, encountering life in the third world. There, they discovered a whole new plane of reality that would inspire them to give their lives to something greater than themselves. In the ensuing years, they were joined by another daughter, EvaJoy, who now plans to move to Kenya with her husband Caleb and their two children. In 2008, Jenelle married James Armstrong, who also travelled to Kitale and was captured by God's love for the children. What began as a family venture has now spread through a network of friends, igniting a passion in the community and beyond to serve the desperately poor.

Caleb Senecal, a tile contractor, lives in Lee, MA with his wife EvaJoy and their two young boys, Jediah and Henry. They met when Caleb decided in early 2007 to travel to Kenya with Africa Connect, which was started by Eva's parents, Bob and LuAnn Herring. Caleb and Eva spent seven weeks with the team among these children of Tuwani, and it changed both of their lives. In September 2007 they returned for six months, and by late 2007, they were married in Kenya. In January 2010, Caleb returned to Kitale, and it was confirmed that these were their people and this was their home. The family spent 3 1/2 months in Kenya in early 2011 laying the groundwork to live there full time, and hope to be able to make the move by January 2012.
